Michael Duffett, Founder of the Deodar Foundation
About the Deodar Foundation
…it all began with the inspiration of
Sir Edmund Hillary
The founder of the Deodar Foundation - the late Michael Duffett - personally knew Sir Edmund, and was the publisher of a number of Sir Edmund’s books. He was moved by the dedication that Sir Edmund showed to the Nepalese people, put into practice through countless projects to improve education, health and living conditions in the high Himalayas.
When 91-year-old Michael Duffett learned about the challenges and deprivations still faced by the families of his thoughtful and loving Nepalese caregivers, he resolved to provide practical help.
By setting up the Deodar Foundation to give back to the families and communities who send their young people to Australia to care for our elderly loved ones, Michael aimed to build on Sir Ed’s legacy. He sought a way that families of those whose sunset years are so enriched through the kindness of their caregivers, could say thank you in a meaningful way.
Michael’s vision continues in his honour. The Trustees of the Deodar Foundation include Michael’s surviving family, close friends and trusted advisors. They are committed to seeing his vision realised, to thank the young people and their families whose care and loyalty means so much to older people and their families across Australia.
And we hope that you, our reader, will also honour and respect these aims through your generous donations.

How we work
The Deodar Foundation works closely with local Australian organisations that have rapid response in Nepal, Bhutan and the Indian Himalaya. These organisations have strong community links that we aim to support.
Through this support, we can centralise efforts to remote regions improving the quality of services that we take for granted here in Australia.
Fostering support to provide basic services such as education, health and supporting the conservation of the local environment helps provide a meaning impact.
